When to send an income change notice

Send a notice as soon as your income goes up or down in a way that could affect support. This includes a new job, reduced hours, loss of overtime, starting a second job, or switching from W-2 to self-employment. Providing the change in writing protects you from claims that you hid the update and gives the other parent time to respond.

Notice vs. filing a motion

Notifying the other parent documents the change but does not automatically modify the order. If you need the court to adjust support, you generally must file a motion or stipulation.
